OMG, The Computer Gods are Toying With Me
So, just in case some of you were having a tough week and feeling down, I thought I’d share something that might make you feel better. Here’s how my week has gone:
- Day job website is down for nearly 100 hours! Nothing seems to work. Finally had to move it to BlueHost and spend two nights working until 2:00 a.m. to get it to work.
- Lost all old emails in the change of hosting for work website. (I’m gonna look at this as a good thing. My inbox is finally clean!)
- Major work project is due today along with material for next week’s board meeting. I send notices that project will not be complete until late this evening due to workload.
- Oh oh, workload is not the problem…it’s the crashed hard drive that I need to worry about. This morning I was greeted with the wonderful “Error loading OS”. After digging through towers of file boxes to find the restore disks, I found out that the HD had simply gone to that great hardware junkyard in the sky. Recovery not possible.
- But that’s okay, I have a backup! FROM TWO WEEKS AGO! Work project is not only delayed, I have to start all over.
- You should see my shiny new computer! Yeah, I could have just bought another hard drive, but the computer was nearly 4 years old and on the list for replacement anyway.
What have we learned? Backup…backup…backup! And how often should you backup? Well, how much work are you willing to recreate? In my case, I will be doing daily backups from now on. Two weeks is too much.
So, right now I’m skipping my web design class to setup the new computer, install backup files, and start work on that project. I actually started this post to tell you that my posting for the next week may be slower, but I will still get something out soon. Besides, on Saturday I will be drawing for the winner of the Blogging Startup contest. Expect a post on Sunday announcing the winner.

OUCH!!!! Oh wow, lots of empathy – that sounds like the week from heck indeed.
I would agree with Justin that getting a second hard drive and mirroring your information is the way to go – that’s how we set up our home network.

Hang in there, as my mom would say,
The Light At The End of the Tunnel…
Is Really…
A Train
Coming At You.
Tomorrow is another day, I hope it’s better for you.
Best wishes,

[...] I saw his post and immediately felt his pain. He has had a rough week finished off with a hard drive crash with only a two week old backup. Talk about a final kick to [...]
Jim,
I feel for you. I’m having more than a little grief with the mechanics of setting up my site, but as you can see from my e-mail address, I do have a start. I’m not promoting the site yet, but do have a starter page up if you would like to take a look.

Yeah, you say you will do daily backups but how long will that last? I think I stuck with it for a week.
Get a second harddrive and get some mirroring software, then you don’t have to worry about it and you can’t forget to do the backup.
