How Do You Measure Blogging Success?

I’ve been kicking this question around recently and still have no definitive answer. But, I have figured out that there’s not one simple measure of blogging success. For some, it is the money they earn. For others, it is how many people see their message.

Well, Nikita Knysh at Nikita Knysh’s Blog has provided us with another interesting way to look at blogging success. In his post, “Calculate Your Blogging Efficiency!“, Nikita describes a simple formula for, duh, calculating your blogging efficiency! You simply divide the number of minutes you spent on your blog by the number of visitors your blog received. Now you know the minutes per visitor ratio for your blog. How cool is that? The Complicated Formula for Success

Okay, for you money-hungry bloggers, we need to put this in terms YOU will understand. Here is my “Calculate Your Blogging Return on Time Investment” formula (or as I like to call it, the ROTI ratio). Divide the money you’ve earned from the blog by the number of minutes you’ve invested. The result is the income per minute for your blogging. Now multiply by 60 for an hourly wage. What? You make less than minimum wage? Sorry, complain to the Blogger’s Union, Local 354.

I’m afraid to total up the number of minutes I spend on my blog. It might actually be easier to calculate the number of minutes I don’t spend on my blog. hehe…

I measure my success primarily by how happy I am with the sites I’ve created, but I love seeing lots of visitors as well! As for money, I enjoy being able to make some money from my blogs, but it’s really nothing compared to the time I put into it. Since I’m receiving a little compensation to do something I would do for free, I’m not complaining!

Thanks Tish. You make a great point. Blogging is not all about money OR visitors. It is whatever makes you happy. So, blogging success can be measured in how much you enjoy blogging!

For me, I love numbers. I’m always doing statistics on things and blogging feeds my numbers addiction. So, for me Blogging + Numbers = Happy Jim.
