Blogroll Series: Does My Blog Need A Blogroll?

Eggrolls or Blogrolls? So, your question is, should your blog have a blogroll (list of links to other blogs)? Well, let’s look at the facts:

So, all real bloggers have a blogroll, right?  Wrong.  There is no requirement that a blog have a blogroll.  In fact, many of the top blogs had dumped the concept of a blogroll.

Here are some reasons to include a blogroll:

  1. You have a great list of blogs that you want to share with your readers.
  2. You want to provide your readers with other resources on the topic of your blog.
  3. You want to use your blogroll as a tool for promoting your blog (watch for a future post on this topic).

Here are some reasons to not include a blogroll:

  1. You don’t want to offend anyone by excluding their blog.
  2. You don’t have a great list of other blogs.
  3. You do not have space on your blog.
  4. You just don’t feel like having one.

The bottom line is, having a blogroll is a matter of personal preference.  But if you are going to have a blogroll, you want to do it right.  This is the first in a series of short posts on blogrolls.  Be sure to return and read the next post, regarding the “unwritten blogroll rule”.

I don’t use a blog roll on most of my blogs because I want to keep the visitors at my blog or atleast get paid if they have to leave through one of my links :D

Hey Tom, I will be writing about this point later in the series. Although the point may be debatable, I believe that blogrolls, in the long run, can be a boost to traffic and readership and don’t pull away from your blog. Stay tuned for that discussion.

yea most of the pro bloggers don’t have one…they just want to make their blog more valuable by not simply giving free link away…

I have a blogroll. Always have. I like it as do my readers. For me, it’s just one more easy way to visit the blogs I like. When I’m on my homepage making sure things look right, it’s one simple click to visit the blogs I read most.

And for my readers, it gets them to some really cool places…like here! :)

Chicken Say, that could be one reason…but I suspect there are other reasons as well.

Thanks Aaron. You make a good point about using your own blogroll to easily visit your own favorite blogs. BTW, good to see you back on the net.
